My Jasmine

While visiting my mom this week I found myself caught up in a little conversation with her roommate at the nursing home - a sweet lady who is 101 and has already informed me that Jasmine and I are her family and that she waits anxiously every day to see us walk in the door to visit my mom. The point is, I was standing at her bedside holding her hand so Jasmine was "in charge" of my mom who was sitting in on her own bed. I heard her talking to her but wasn't really sure what they were talking about. After my short 5 minute conversation with the lovely Senora, I walked over to see what Jasmine and my mom were so busy with. Jasmine was so proud when she looked at me and said "Mami, I'm teaching Grandma how to drink from a straw!" I can't explain how proud I was - of both of them! I must mention that my mom doesn't speak much and when she does, it doesn't usually make sense. Her actions are very random at this point and though I'm confident her beautiful soul is soaring and that she's untouched by any and all things happening to her worldly body at this time, she can appear very confused to the uniformed stranger. Jasmine however has adapted amazingly and has no problem at all visiting the nursing home. She is happy to wave at all the residents as we walks through the building. Needless to say, she lights up the place. She happily holds Grandma's hand as we walk slowly down the halls and she's always the first one to notice when "we need to wipe Grandma's nose" or "Grandma's spilling food on herself we need to get her a napkin!" I've never seen her more proud though than the time she saw Grandma stand at the sink and put her hands under the water - "Look Mami, Grandma's washing her own hands! She did it! Very good Grandma!"
